THE WHITE ORCHID

Written, Produced, Edited and Directed by Steve Anderson

THE WHITE ORCHID is a rich-looking, intriguing and sexy film noir mystery. Stylishly directed.
— Jack Garner DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE

Shy and reserved, Claire Decker is an investigator for Social Services. Typically she handles cases of senior citizens who have died alone, leaving no will or next of kin. This time, Claire is assigned an intriguing murder mystery. A beautiful woman, known only as “The White Orchid,” is dead. Unable to decipher the victim's identity, the local police cannot solve the horrific crime. As she digs deeper, Claire finds herself emotionally drawn to the enigmatic blond victim and must take dangerous personal and professional risks to solve the mysterious crime.

Olivia Thirlby is absolutely great here. This modern noir takes up back to the days of Bogart.

Shifts in color, the menacing music, lingering stares, classic film fatale portrayals with pops of red color, and the fatalism as a whole do the genre justice.

The White Orchid is the kind of sensual mystery thriller you just don’t see anymore. Taking its time with reveals, it develops its characters, impressing you with a script full of twists you won’t see coming. Performances are top notch, the narrative flies by. Simply one of those films that comes out of nowhere, having you ask how the hell it happened in the first place.

Easily one of the more underrated sleeper gems of 2018, this is a movie made by someone who truly understands and loves the genre. To add one more compliment, this film - much like Call Me By Your Name - has one of the most beautiful end credit shots I’ve ever seen. A visual that not only encapsulates the film’s darker themes in one final farewell, but one that sums up the heated spirit of the noir genre as a whole.
